I've been looking at doing my own doll next since I already have a premade one but the only thing is that you're going to be doing the face up and protecting yourself so if you think you've got the artistic skills or make-up know-how to paint her face up then by all means get a blank head and try with that, you could always get a couple. they have products that allow you to draw what you'd like on the face before committing to paint that's water soluble so you can practice first though so that's definitely an option.
It'll be a good while before I lay down the money to attempt to customize a blank head though but it is something I wish to do someday
