Technically all mana is dark as it manifests as black goo balls, but in this usage I presume it's the "corrupted demonic energy" in the Unicorn to Bicorn process.

>The Resurgent Kingdoms:
>1. In modern times both the apophis and those who protected the ruins have become beautiful women (supporting the theory that the "chosen retainers" were indeed ancient anubis and sphinx), and the dormant pharaohs and their people have risen as undead.
>2. When a pharaoh awakens, for instance when their monstrous guards mating with men produce enough mana to make the air replete with it, and restores the land she also causes any of their people, now mummies, in the ruins to awaken as well.
>3. Modern apophis use silver adornments, the symbol of the moon, to mark their contrasts with the pharaohs. They continue to target the ruins of sleeping pharaohs, though not their venom does not kill a pharaoh but makes her like a tamed animal so the apophis can rule in her stead (note that clarification from KC have made this less severe than it may seem, tamed pharaohs still can live pretty productive lives, they just aren't the lead ruler anymore).
>4. All the monstrous subjects of an apophis' kingdom adopt the silver adornments, lending them a dancer-like appearance. Such a kingdom has a salacious atmosphere, like a bordello.
>5. Khepris are rather different, having appeared seemingly from nowhere in uninhabited ruins where the pharaohs were truly killed.
>6. Interviews with khepri reveal they are familiar with the ruins and the surrounding lands, as if they have lived there all along. They likewise remember the ancient kingdoms, though their recall is worse than that of the pharaohs.
>7. Its theorized the khepri were produced from the divine power and mana that was scattered over a given ruin when a given pharaoh was slain, fusing with the souls of their slain subjects who died in the midst of great remorse.
>8. The khepri's shells are filled with enchanting, sun-like light, as if they inherited the power of the sun god that the slain pharaohs possessed. Their identity as former people of the ancient desert kingdoms is speculated to be why they perceive themselves as subjects and soldiers rather than rulers, and why they seek out a new leader to rebuild their kingdoms.

The khepri's book profile speaks of some of the different roles and body types in a khepri colony:

>Sweet, slight servants.
>Hale and hearty soldiers.
>Tall, stern state ministers (who seem asexual but of course are not).

One theory given about the khepri's origin is that they were born form the souls of the desert kingdoms slain inhabitants, fused with the power of the sun god that was released when pharoahs were slain and their mana scattered.

The evidence for this theory is in that the khepri are familiar with the ruins and surrounding lands of the desert kingdoms, despite the race having seemingly shown up out of nowhere. They have memories of the kingdoms, but their recall is worse than the pharaoh's own admittedly vague memories. Their golden shells are also filled with light, i.e. the power of the ancient sun god who appointed the pharaohs.

Being ancient subjects of the destroyed kingdoms is also theorized to be why they instinctively seek out a new leader to help them rebuild destroyed lands.
