From a christian perspective while the male is supposed to lead, marriage is the act of giving yourself to your spouse entirely. You do both become each other's property and own each other in mind and body, hence why its supposed to be significant as you do become bonded. This is why that there isn't any real clause for divorce in a religious wedding except 'unto death' and its still considered adultery to divorce and get a new spouse, only one contract is valid before God after all.
