The Zaku II is the best goddamned robot the Gundam franchise has ever come up with, despite being utter cannon fodder in most of its appearances, being outclassed by the GM in terms of specs, armament, and armour, despite being obsolete as soon as the Dom came online.

Wait, if GMs fought on equal enough footing with Zakus that they presented a credible threat, how did they ever deal with Doms and their incredible ground speed? You'd think they'd be made mincemeat of.

Honestly the Zaku and original GM are the most restrained designs of the series. Even the Gouf with its machine-gun fingers represents a flight into the absurd compared to the Zaku.

Gundarium was also no defense against being melted through by beam weapons. Beam sabers also have better range than the heat hawk. Are you really going to go charging a guy with a hatchet when he's got a rapier?

The Zaku isn't very powerful at all. Specs-wise, it's weaker than everything else. It's restricted to only a few main armaments, which tend to be weaker than anything else on the market (the GM gets equipped with "beam spray guns", while the Zaku never gets anything more powerful than its 120mm MG and huge bazooka!") The Zaku appreciation comes from its excellent design, imposing but not ostentatious. One of many, a mass-produced weapon of war.
