I imagine it went pretty poorly, becoming a magician means abandoning her humanity and becoming a demon, with Zun calling Vampires and Magicians similar to Devils. Not to mention the health risks Magicians face and the fact becoming a Youkai is punishable by death.

It's no wonder Okina, a god of outcasts, sees Marisa as a potential subordinate in the future. Not to mention Marisa favoring Keiki. Honestly I don't see him as abusive, Why would she keep the Kirisame name if he was.
My head cannon for her backstory is that she became infatuated with magic after her mother's death and after her father responded poorly she ran away and indulged further in her childish delusions about how abandoning her humanity.

Reimu does have some dialogue in UDoaLG that alludes to Genji, and honestly I don't see this new information about Marisa backstory as something that deconfirms mima.
