You're really overthinking it. They wanted MC to have a sister heroine but didn't want to deal with incest so his parents had to be divorced or dead. They didn't want the heavy drama of MC having a dead parent, so they went with divorce. They didn't want any romantic drama with MC's parents in moege, so they went with
