I doubt even Ryukishi himself considers the og sprites to be representative of the character's actual appearance. It's just the best he could personally do on his own. Regardless, it feels ridiculous to discard every single art style by the myriad of talented artists who lent their skills to the series over the years. You might as well claim that Everyone in Touhou is flat because ZUN never draws breasts.
