Let's turn the Final Fantasy VI characters into their counterpart Touhous. So far, I've got:

Sabin => Mokou
This one should be pretty obvious.

Edgar => Nitori
Same for this one.

Umaril => Suika
Uncontrolled physical powerhouse, Drunken physical powerhouse. Replace Green Cherry with a Shot of Sake, Bone Wrist with Wrist Chains, and Berzerker Ring with, of course, Sake Gourd.

Strago or Locke => Marisa
Strago steals magic abilities, Locke steals everything else. Marisa could fill either role. I lean a bit towards Locke, storyline-wise, since I have difficulty seeing Marisa as a wizened old grandmother.

Cid => Eirin
Magical researcher blah blah, etc.

Celes => Kaguya
Mostly because it fits the plot and relationships. Eirin is her mentor/friend. Mokou hates her guts. I'm sure if I thought about it enough I could find a way for Manipulation of Eternity to work like Rune.
Locke would also work as Nazrin, but that would effectively lock Marisa in place as the granny of whoever replaces Relm.

I just love Suika's FFXI monk look in this. The style is great, I wish there was more art of her in armour or occidental-style costume in general.

I still play and run my own event linkshell on Ragnarok. Been playing with the same crew for six or so years.

Suppose in the future we develop the technology for simulated reality ala The Matrix, and Gensokyo is available as one of the many realities on offer.

Now there are two versions of Gensokyo available, one is for people who plugs in from time to time to visit. The users are still aware that they are in a simulated reality and the touhous understand the users as visiting outsiders. Basically like a more immersive version of modern day MMORPG.

The other is for users who have permanently wired themselves in and elected to make themselves forget that there's an outside world. They live full time in Gensokyo until they vegetative body on the outside die. Permanent vegetative state will allow their real body to have a much longer lifespan than normal people, due to less wear and tear.
