“…and you were so cute back then.” Nue said, floating and leaning on Goro’s back as he hutched over, digging through dirt.
“Hurhhhhhh!” A hound sounded beside the two.
“It’s ‘NUEEEE’ you little varmint, ‘NUEEEE’!” The Nue explained.
“That little ‘varmint’ is a godsend.” Goro said, pulling a root-like object out of the dirt “Finally going to get me an in with the Tengu, sniffing out these roots. you know these ingredients are a delicacy to them, but they’re too proud to dig it up themselves? Guess it’s because it’s never a given seeing how the growing season’s temperamental and they can’t cultivate it.”
“And certainly not because someone spread seeds of the unidentifiable around.” Nue whistled.
“I’ll be sure to spread rumors about the seasoning only the pious can taste in any case.” Goro laughed.
“So…you coming back to the temple any time soon? Hijiri will just keep on tacking more hours onto your eventual scolding session for never calling if you don’t.” Nue asked.
“Agh, it feels awkward coming around. She’ll ask me about becoming ordained, whether my business practices are ethical, or try playing match maker again. I just wish she would talk more about herself; my business isn’t that important.”
“Ha! Last week she tried to get me and this fortune teller together, but when I asked him to divine something, he said we’d have a big happy family! What a loon! I mean, can you imagine me as a mother?” Nue laughed.
“I don’t have to imagine.” Goro casually commented.
“Pardon?” Nue said, surprised.
“Oh nothing.” He said, trailing off.
“Goro? What did you mean by that?” Nue asked.
“I wonder, I wonder!” Goro replied as they walked off.
