Hana looked at Aunn, who looked at Hana, who looked at Aunn in return. With an unsteady hand Hana reached across the table and patted the Tengu’s back as she awkwardly soothed her, “Uh… Er… Sorry for scaring you and uh…”

At a complete loss Aunn too patted the sobbing tengu, the trio stayed like that for a bit until the other Aunn came back with a tray of tea and snacks for them all, it seems Aunn had gotten the good sweets from the local confectionary Hana wanted to save… well… if it’d settle this stupid crow…


Aya was nibbling on a square slice of the chestnut speckled treat. Despite still being bound and fed by hand by Aunn, who was all smiles and still in ‘big sister’ mode ever since the tengu cracked into tears, Aya was notably more calm. Albeit she was still a bit weepy, saying that she ‘was so happy that Hana-chan took after her father so well’

First sobbing, now so happy that she shed tears of joy? And what was with that bird calling her ‘chan’? Hana barely even knew the bird after all, the amount of times she talked to her personally could be counted on her hands, and even then it was for her stupid paper.

Hana would’ve pressed the tengu but every time Hana tried asking a question Aunn would give her those eyes, mad eyes she’d give her back when she was getting scolded for being naughty. Hana had shut up then and sipped at her own tea and nibbled on her share of the sweets. At least it was clear that Aya was recovering, Aunn’s ministrations and spoiling seemed to go a long way along with Hana’s occasional half-hearted word confirming that she wasn’t really mad anymore.

Even Hana’s seals were tucked away now and out of sight, she could still grab them at a moments’ notice. Though Hana didn’t feel it would be all that necessary all things considered, she couldn’t detect a trace of falsehood in Aya’s act and it seemed her emotions were genuine. Plus, she did trust Aunn’s senses about this, that little Komainu was perceptive at times like these.

Aunn wiped Aya’s tears once more and let her clear her nose into a handkerchief after the tea and snacks were finished. Silence took hold for a bit as Hana figured that now would be the time to continue her questions, albeit with more tact than before lest she get a grumpy Aunn to deal with later.

Hana couldn’t help but scratch her head as she thought. It was paradoxically harder to deal with the tengu now that she was docile and comfortable, but Hana wouldn’t get anywhere if she didn’t take the initiative and she couldn’t press her too hard right now. The miko-in-training cleared her throat, getting the mollified crow tengu to look at her with eyes still red from the tears, “Shameimaru-san, I was hoping you could answer some questions for me…” The tengu nodded without a word, “I have need to contact Yukari’s shikigami, the ninetailed fox named Ran, it seems she’s quite elusive when she’s not manning the reception desk. I’ve little interest in meeting her in such settings. you see…”

Aya nodded, an understanding filled her eyes as she seemed to connect some kind of threads, “I can do that… I…” she seemed to settle on a thought, “I do know what she gets up too outside of that place, so I can find her and pass along a message. Ah, she will ask what the purpose of the meeting is before she’ll meet with you, what should I tell her?”

Hana thought about things for a moment, but decided that in this case the truth would be for the best. After all, knowing Aya she’d find out afterwards anyways, “Simply put, I’ve been trying to figure out the reasons for why Yukari-san has done this, I have my suspicious but… The fastest way would be to pry it out of her”

Staring at Hana Aya suddenly burst out laughing, surprising Aunn and Hana alike with her outburst. A throaty laugh, as if she couldn’t suppress that inner crowlike aspect of herself which threatened to overtake her, “Y-you wanna…! For such a reason...!” Another outburst overcame her as she choked out, “Just going to walk up to Yukari and…!”

Clearing her throat Hana got the crow tengu’s attention as the outburst faded away, “Yes…” she sighed, “I’m done speculating about why and why not, nothing she’s done makes sense from how I heard she was before! I think that if I can simply figure out why she’s doing this then me and my friends can shut it down faster than if we don’t!”

Aya seemed to have recover finally, an unusually sharp look overtook her face. Hana couldn’t help but wonder if all the tengu were this insane in how they acted as Aya spoke with the laughter in her voice gone, “What makes you think Yukari will allow you to walk out of there alive? What makes you so sure that she needs any reason at all to do such things?”
