I'd get out my pocketknife, and start shaving up the softest wood from the woodpile to make tinder. Once that has been accomplished, I'll pile the tinder under some larger sticks, and atop of those will be placed the split side of a half-log.

Then I will find a branch of soft wood about as thick as my arm, perhaps a little less, and with my knife gouge a groove down the length of it. With a smaller stick of hardwood, whittled to a point, I'll start rubbing up and down the groove swiftly, letting the friction heat things up. While this is going on, sawdust ground out by the process will fall on the tinder, helping things along.

Eventually you'll get the wooden tip glowing, and the bits of falling sawdust will be burning, and you can slowly fan the fire into life.
