In my experience it was a good indicator of my JLPT score last year. ~30 total points under passing the N2, with about an even score in each section.

You boys sign up for the winter JLPT yet?
Going for round 2 on the N2. Much better chance this time around.

Should I shoot for N1 this December (and most likely fail) or just go ahead and pass the N2?
Failed the N2 last year by a solid 10 points in every category so it's probably going to be a cakewalk this year for me.

I heard the difficulty jump between N2 and N1 is the highest between any two tests though.
