the problem is that patent applications do not necessarily demonstrate who is inventing actual useful and innovative things. i have a suspicion based on strong historical precedent that if there was a catalog of "modern innovations/inventions", measured by references from experts (i.e. "who do modern experts think made the most contributions to their fields?"), the US and individual western countries would dwarf china and japan.
