>i guess if you feel like the game is whitewashing japan in wwii like the other anon said, you could see it that way, but I honestly see the game as the opposite of whitewash.
I feel as though it doesn't take the source material seriously, like they're just using it as a trivia mine. There's quite a lot about WWII that doesn't neatly boil down into a list of campaigns and their orders of battle but that's basically never touched on, including, well, the entire history of the Japanese Empire up until the evening before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Yeah, Japan does go all-out on playing with their own history, but a lot of franchises seem to execute things more elegantly than Kancolle does. For example, Touhou butchers both Japanese mythology and history left and right, but it also pays homage to it in a way that takes things seriously in-universe. Of course, there's lots of silly stuff out there, but I think I just don't pay as much attention to it. It doesn't help that WWII itself is fairly recent.

>maybe im looking too deep into it, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the proper way to play the game is the exact opposite of how the jpn went about wwii
Honestly, the one who's looking too deep into it is probably me. The way that the girls are treated in both official and doujin work is miles and far away removed from the way that any sailor or soldier was treated in Imperial Japan. But that in and of itself is weird due to the fact that it's just kind of written out of history. Take Iowa fighting alongside the IJN girls, for example - it's great, isn't it? But it's also weird. In some sense having the Axis fight the Allies is actually less weird than having the Axis and Allies team up because you don't have to ask where all the historical baggage went. (Yeah, yeah, alternate universe, future, there are no Axis or Allies in the Kancolleverse... but let's face it, it's just not convincing seeing as how the girls seem to know their own history.)

>the gameplay is still fucking shit though, jesus fuck.
Back in the day /jp/ called it an timer countdown simulator and it really hasn't gone too far from its roots.
