I think maybe it's one of the beautiful things about this series, that you can feel it in so many different ways.
There are some people who believe Gensokyo is happy and good, and all the bad things that happen are just shenanigans.
Then you have people who go for the dark fantasy, hardcore mythology aspect and see it as a much more grim series.

And the wonder of it is that the art is so pretty and cute and anime-ish, but the stories themselves, if they didn't have that art on top of them, would be extremely dark.
I think that's beautiful, honestly. It may be why the fanbase is so large.
