Before I got into Touhou, I despised it because Touhou fans were borderline autistic back on ye-old /a/. We didn't have captchas back then so namefags like AoRF could use imagedump scripts to hijack/derail threads using 2hu images. I finally gave in and played the game and I was shocked by how shitty the art style and story was. I would then argue that ZUN is a hack writer and that the series is only popular due to fan contributions. I would later realize the appeal of ZUN's art style. And I also ended up liking ZUN as a writer after reading Yukari Yakumo's power in PMiSS.

It is virtually impossible to create a character with a unique power seeing how we've been through over 8 decades of super hero comics/shonen fight anime. Any power you can think of has already been done, so just the fact that ZUN was able to invent a new power (boundary manipulation) made me respect him as a writer. And her boundary manipulation isn't limited to just physical things. Like, she can in theory manipulate the boundary between winning and losing a fight. Or the boundary between life and death. Or imaginary vs actual. A liberal interpretation of her ability could make her one of the strongest characters in the history of storytelling, but ZUN shits on powerlevel fags like me and only gives her a weaker interpretation of her PMiSS abilities.

But you're right, I am a shameless secondary fan. Again, I like ZUN, but I still think the fans are the main reason why Touhou took off. And now that 2hu no longer dominates the doujinshi circles, there's not enough fan content to keep me interested.
