I'd go to Byakuren to learn her brand of magic since discarding my humanity for power sounds right up my alley. I wouldn't even mind training as a monk too if she wanted me to. I just hope I don't have to shave my head since I like my hair but if that's the cost of power then so be it. After I have sufficient control over the power I guess I'd do missionary work for the temple. My end goal was always to just be strong enough that I can go sight seeing anyways.

Personally I still like Byakuren and her concept better. She's an "evil" wizard that believes herself to be a saint. It appeals to me since I enjoy characters with a religious flare to them, especially when they are the ass kicking monk variety. I also like that her powers come from an evil place not fitting of her status as a monk. I like that everything she did she did out of a place of fear. She was afraid of dying so she used demonic magic to preserve herself. She was afraid of losing her powers so she became an ally to the youkai. It makes her seem more human, which I guess makes sense since she is a human.

I like that her magic focuses on helping her punch people in the face rather than shoot lasers or some other flashy effect. Even with her demon powered punch magic, she's still a monk before she's an "evil" wizard. She does monk things like chanting and meditating all day. She doesn't go out and pick fights just because she doesn't like someone. If she punches someone in the face it's because she is trying to defend the youkai in her care and their way of life.

And speaking of youkai, people give her shit for being a human and still protecting them. Though she initially only protected them to protect herself, she came to actually want to defend the youkai from a place of love. The youkai are strong but they are not strong enough and she saw that. She wanted to make sure that they continued to exist, not unlike how we view endangered animals. Just because a tiger can kill you in a one on one fight doesn't mean that they should all be killed so they can't hurt anyone anymore.

All that said, I don't actually know much about Miko. I doubt she could top Byakuren in my mind though. Also Byakuren reminds me of Virgo Shaka from Saint Seiya and that guy made Buddhism look fucking badass.

We need some battle monk up in here.

I love how Shou's SoPM entry says that she lacks training in martial arts, because this clearly implies that everyone else in the temple is a badass fist-wielding monk.
