The yukkuri's greatest sin is their lack of fear of man. Even the mighty predators of land (with a few exceptions) and air will withdraw rather than risk a confrontation with a human being -- creatures that have all their lives killed with impunity and have never had to flee from another animal still feel an instinctual fear of humans, overcome only by the most crazed or desperate.[1]

Yet far from having a fear of mankind, the yukkuri dream themselves masters of this world. A rabbit will not even sleep on ground that has the scent of a human on it, but yukkuri will enter human homes and approach the occupants with imperious demands. The yukkuri are not merely inconvenient: their existence is an affront to human majesty that cannot go unanswered.
