I prefer it that way. If you actually have a fitting amount that is. The typical 10-20 backgrounds VNs have are nowhere near enough when you do photos.
I still love how pic related handled this. There was a scenario, where some character "infiltrated" a house, after a teacher went missing or something and a lot of weird stuff comes up. There are tons of photos for the interior of the house, so you always see exactly where you are and how it looks. It added a ton to the horror-ish atmosphere. Commercial VNs probably use the amount of backgrounds used in that one scene over a whole game or something.
