From what I've understood it has something to do with japanese myths about the moon, but it's still, why not keep that, for example, for Tsukuyomi, their moon deity? And there are weirder examples like picrel who are supposed to be a goddess associated with snakes and dragons. (Well she is depicted as a dragon-fox ina version of a story about her but, where are the dragon parts in this one?)
