Shirou and Saber are both people who generally don't value themselves or their right to live selfishly. By focusing exclusively on the happiness of other people, they're dodging the hard part of living that comes with accepting the past and asserting your desires, and skipping straight to absolution. If they were hypothetically living for the sake of people they knew directly, those people wouldn't be fulfilled either, because they're not quite carrying on a relationship with a well-balanced human who would be okay on their own.

I was intending to spend a steady stream of time on Stay Night and finish it in a month, but Fate True End really struck me and I've gotta give it time to sink in. Another anon posted something to the same effect recently.
