As it turns out, all you need is a good Touch during day battle to kill off the meatshield escorts in the main fleet, then friend fleet can pummel the boss half dead by the time you start night battle

I'm glad I didn't give up on both E-2 and E-3 hard, despite being unable to debuff the boss and things looking incredibly grim during E-2's LD
