I'm about to finish my first VN and while I learned a lot, I still have to look up quite a lot of words.
Now that's fine cause I gradually get better, the next VN should become easier and easier as I go on.

漫画 usually uses rather easy language and many of them have furigana, so that's not too hard to read as well.

But ゲーム seem like a huge wall, something I can only enjoy after I become fairly good at Japanese, with it's often auto advancing text and no way to look up words easily.
Are games easier than the average VN language wise? If I read 2-3 more VNs will I be able to play through a JRPG without having to look up too much stuff?

I just feel so hopeless without a texthooker.

The discussion about mining vs reading got me thinking and I'm not sure what to do from now on.

I used to mine everything I didn't already know, but the thing is I absolutely fucking hate anki and would like to decrease the time spent with it as much as possible (while still learning effectively).

Like one anon said >>17298953 the easy words you see while reading will get huge intervals fast and the harder and rare ones will be reviewed more often.
But I think even that is a waste of time, especially cause it is easier to learn from context, sometimes you don't even need to learn the word in the first place to get what it means.

Here an example of Hanahira, after talking about food for a while someone says this after they finished eating 口に合って良かった you are likely to guess the meaning from the kanji and context and I'm pretty sure even without anki I would know what it means the next time I see it.

Mining rarer words on the other hand isn't really enjoyable either imo.
I mean I'm sure it won't be the last time that I encounter 鰹節 but I think now it not the time to hammer it into my brain by force.

What do DJT?
