Playing for hours on end will mean your overall ability will start declining rapidly after you've hit your peak. If at any point you start feeling frustrated you should just stop playing for the time being.

In order to keep your performance at an optimal level throughout a long playing session you'll need to do the following:
1: Drink plenty of water. It's important to keep hydrated.
2: Takes breaks. Your fingers and brain will need the occasional rest.

Now, here's some general advice for any new to the genre:
1: If you have any intention of getting good, absolutely avoid easy mode.
2: Bomb whenever you feel under pressure or are unable to avoid something.
3: Practice mode makes the learning curve a little less steep. Practice stages until you minimize life loss and bomb usage.
4: Use continues on your first playthrough. This way you'll unlock them for practice mode.
5: If you're using a narrow shot type don't just fuck about lingering at the bottom center of the screen. You'll need to be more aggressive.
6: Learn the layout of the stages. Practice mode makes this a hell of a lot easier and you'll cutting out huge portions of enemy projectiles if you kill them quickly.
7: Don't concentrate solely on the area around your character at all times. You'll need to look at various areas of the screen when they need your attention. This usually comes naturally.
8: Identify bullets and patterns that are and aren't aimed at you. Aimed bullets can be avoided by simply tapping out of the way.
9: There are a myriad of other bullet hell games out there. Get MAME and a PS2 emulator and start hunting for them. A lot of bullet hell fundamentals are pretty universal.

The rest is problem solving on your part. Don't expect to get good quickly. Anything needs time to develop and some people take longer than others.
