The anime somehow lowered everyone's competence by so many levels that it came off as a miracle for any of the characters to be alive in a 50-year-long war, it simply boggles the mind. Last Bullet at least manages to make the 3 protagonist legions look like functional teams.

I do recommend that you check out the live action productions if you enjoy character-driven plots, Odaiba in particular is less about the battles they are fighting but heavy on intra-cast drama. I find that it handles the themes of found family and sisterhood (by blood and by choice) a lot better than the anime's attempt to be like "they call each other sister but they're not blood related so it's okay if they kiss!" which felt hamfisted.
