Oni stem from ancient Japanese popular belief in invisible spirits influenced by Chinese tradition. In onmyoji, ancient oni were associated with the "demon gate" of the Northeast, also read as the "cow/tiger" direction, and thus in the 15th to 16th century the popular image of oni as we know them today was finished by incorporating the horns of a cow (or more likely a bull), the tigerskin loincloth which later came to signify ferocity, and the red/blue skin tones shamelessly copied from various Chinese demons.
