Did you grow up in a place that doesn't celebrate Valentine's Day?
As for how the symbol came to be that way, much less clear. It has been used as an explicit symbol of hearts and romance for less than a millennia.
It could be associated with comfy things and fertility for far longer than that though. It's a floral shape shared by a few aspects of female anatomy.
