For instance: on the eve of the Civil War, there were anti-abolitionist riots in New York (people were angry at abolitionists, identifying them as the cause of the war everyone knew was likely to break out.) The mobs smashed up Greely's Tribune (a well-known abolitionist paper,) then turned to cross the street and trash the offices of the New York Times.

Now, we all know the modern New York Times. It is literally the gold standard of left-wing activism and editorializing in the news section - only the LA Times can seriously give it a run for its money. According to their editorials and news coverage, Guns are the Great Satan killing America, and they should all be banned.

Well, folks, the New York Times of the 1800s was a different beast. Very different. For as the mobs surged into the Times's lobby, they were met with the sight of *three fucking gatling guns* the editor had wisely purchased a few days prior.
