I'm not sure, but Terraria has more content and was made by a guy and his wife and has been around for less years.
There's not even the excuse of "it's 2D vs 3D" because sprite art requires 10 times the effort of the "block art" Minecraft is.

And the thing that makes me angry the most: Terraria is more combat based than sandbox, while Minecraft is the opposite, and YET Terraria has more customization/blocks/furnitures etc to build your buildings and bases.
