Ragnarök is often translated as "twilight of the gods", but if I don't remember wrong it's closer to "cohesion of the gods" or something to that effect. Basically Ragnarök is the climax of the chain of events the gods set into motion by first creating the world. It's not so much that the world is destroyed, as that the process of the world is completed and wrapped up. There's got to be an end to the story before another can begin.
