I'm a fairly introverted person. Like I'm not the type to ever invite anyone to a theme park, but some girls invited me because they wanted to be friends. They also would invite me to eat with them and go to birthday parties or holiday celebratrtions with them. I still keep in contact with the closer friends I've made chat with them on LINE and Instagram. The close ones still message me out of the blue, and we play games together online too when I have time. I have friends from back home who I feel less close to, or we've drifted apart over time and because of life and other responsibilities. I'm not denying that Japanese relationships are generally a bit different, and they can be hard to connect with at times, but it's not like you can't form closer relationships with some too.
