as a beginner admiral should i try and craft guns or just loot 12.7's off everything and use them.?

i'm still running round on 1-2 with the occasional trip to 1-3 to get my ass kicked. mostly trying to farm composition quest ships.

any tips about formations and my type 0 that keeps getting shot down.
