I’ve taken one in an instrument-shaped hard case internationally and a soft duffel bag case nationally. I had no troubles with airlines in either case with the bag as my “carry on” luggage.

The hard case felt easier to deal with because it was an “instrument” and it was much more protective. The duffel bag was more worrisome since she had less protection and I was fretting that I would have to gate check her due to different carry on size regulations or just plain running out of room in the overhead bins.

As long as the bag fit the size regulations, they won’t care what’s inside.
