You have zero idea. To use a 3D example, take Nayuta Aku/Nonamera. She was part of an idol group called Avandoned but left it because an indie agency/record label wanted to build a group around her (originally Kaqriyo Terror Architect, now called KAQRIYOTERROR). She was with the group for about a year before she suddenly just disappeared, went completely off the grid with nobody from her friends, management or other group members being able to get in contact with her for about a week.

When they did get back in contact she seems to have basically told her maanger that she just couldn't handle it and was withdrawing. Basically it seems like some fans were critical and she was already an overcritical person regarding herself so she kind of went into a spiral of self-doubt, had a nervous breakdown and quit. She wound up re-emerging a few months ago in a new group with one of her friends from Avandoned that's incredibly small time but she seems a lot happier.

There are more than a fair number of girls who become idols precisely because they have low self-esteem and feel like the idea of it, with the wota and basically hiding behind a character, will help them deal with their confidence issues. For some it does, for others it doesn't.
