It has always been my understanding, pretty much from this scene (pic rel), that their intent wasn’t to end the world, but rather that Roa took a page from CM’s book, and was trying to upheaval the World’s foundation, trying to pin down arc, reach out to his “God”, the Celestial Egg, and change the World.

At this point in time, his goal had already been corrupted from “living forever so I can see the end of mankind and obtain knowledge, uncover the truth of the cosmos.” To “Uncover the truth of the cosmos and prove my theory so I can perpetuate my existence.”, so it made sense to me that he would bring down the World’s Luminary to evolve himself by changing the world. And everyone else followed along because he either promised them good stuff, shared his ideals, or fell for his charisma.

Personally, I interpreted this more as a tool of war/invasion or someone’s idea blood. Similar to how Gawain, in Camelot, had a blessing to always have the sun where he was, so he was stronger, the DAA would use a curse (or someone’s principle) to bring about a never ending night, canceling the timer on their rampage known as “sunrise”.
