The critical part is thinking your OWN goofy things that you came up with yourself, rather than relying on someone else's. Even if you're wrong, you remember meanings based on your own knowledge and beliefs, and it's easier to correct wrong ones than it is to 100% instill the right ones from the outset. If someone internalizes 自ら by thinking 水から (one's own self is made mostly from water, after all) even though the two are not at all related, it's well enough that it works for them.

It beats the fucking hell out of remembering this wall of dogshit Heisenberg wants you to use, which doesn't indicate anything towards how it is read.
