Hello, OP here. You should go play the games! The first thing I need to explain is that each Touhou game has several names, which can make keeping track of them confusing. There's the number of the game in the series, the English name, and the Japanese name. Usually people use the english name+number, so pay attention to these. Moriyashrine has every touhou game for free, but 9-17 are on Steam for $15 each if you want to give ZUN his beer money. If you see Touhou games with decimals in their name, like 12.3 or 10.5; this means they're spinoffs: it's an official game made by ZUN, but not one of the nomal games, usually with some gimmick. (Such as freezing bullets or using literal cheat codes) Avoid these until you've played a few of the normal games to get a feel for the gameplay and setting.

6 is a good starting game, but is challenging, locks content behind harder difficulties and is a bit... crusty compared to other Touhou games. However, this is the start of the series so it's nice to start where it all began. (Touhou 1-5 were for the PC-98. Ignore these unless you are very curious, since they are unfortunately irrelevant.)
Other good starting games are 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom, 9: Mountain of Faith and 17: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. These are all relatively easy, accessible and iconic.

Do not worry about being bad. Play on easy mode. Use all your bombs, and use all your continues. Skill will come in time. You only need the patience to see it through. Touhou is a simple game- arrow keys to move, z to shoot, x to bomb, shift to slow your movement- but it takes many hours of practice to get good at them. Another thing, don't get burned out. If you're feeling determined enough to keep playing despite your failures, good! But don't feel pressured to do so if you aren't enjoying it. Touhou is supposed to be fun; it's all about improving your skills, listening to the music, admiring the bullet patterns and so on.

I think I've given a pretty good, and not excessively overwhelming, explanation of how to get into the games. One final note: the games are all Japanese but can be enjoyed without ever doing any reading. There is a patch called thpatch that translates Touhou into many languages if you want to understand the games more.
Good luck!

Youmu can cut time, Sakuya is useless.
