For rarity upgrade you need to get them to level 30 and then use these flasks (they are different for each class: red, yellow, green, blue, purple) and gold. Spectra need double the materials to upgrade.

The thing you need copies for is the level-limit-break you do on 6 star girls. You can't use 3 star girls, a 4star gives you 2 levels. I don't know what 5 or 6 star copies would do.
