To be clear, this doesn't mean "for every monster there is only one possible mate" (though that can happen too), it simply means a monster isn't going to form that permanent pair bond with a man who isn't suitable for her.

For many monsters they can sense that he'll be suitable upon simply seeing a given man, for others it takes a bit more time.

It's also nothing new really, even if we've only gotten details more recently. "If a man strikes her fancy" has been one of the most used types of lines in the profiles for years, and given we've also long known that monsters don't choose men based only on appearance or ability, that naturally meant they are looking for/sensing something else that strikes their fancy. We've likewise long known that a man's capacity to desire her is the thing monsters want most in a mate (well alongside with him not being evil).

Honestly, monsters having to wait to find a suitable man makes the setting less of a hugbox in a sense. It means that some unlucky monsters go through many years of loneliness before they find a man they want to ravish.

One wonders just how long it takes for a apophis that gets a mate before conquering a pharaoh to lose all interest in that task. Like does she at first keep talking like she is going to do it, planning, even gathering servants, yet time and again putting off putting the plan into motion until finally one night after riding her mate into near unconsciousness she coils him tight and confesses she doesn't want to give her current lifestyle with him up.
