/jp/ doesn't base itself too much on history, codes or memes, mostly because people will accuse you of being from another board if you try to pull that here. For the most part, it's best to consider that any content other than VNs and Touhou is accepted on a provisional basis. Even if other content gets posted, it will either be deleted or whined about, or both, so it's very recommendable to exercise caution with it.

To understand /jp/, the best thing to do is try out some of the popular Touhou games, familiarize yourself with the Touhou universe, and play all VNs you see people talking about. And learn Japanese. Basically, to fit in here perfectly is a huge effort, and highly unrewarding.
