You don't have photoreceptors along the surface of your eye where the optic nerve is located.
You don't normally notice because your eyes have absolutely fucking garbage resolution outside of the center of your vision so your eyes jitter around to point the region of good resolution on aread of interest and what you end up "seeing" is acomposite view of what you've seen recently and what you're currebtly seeing.

Apropos of nothing, you immune system can't reach most of your eye. So if your body thinks your eye might be infected it will try to curb the infection by cutting off bloodflow to the eyeball and letting it die.
