You're thinking of typical human-human relationships. In nonhuman-human relationships, the wife is very much expected to keep her husband safe from predators and deal with the constant kidnapping attempts and other threats to steal the male away.
Among the weaker youkai that somehow snag a human husband, there have been many incidents where the husband would wake up surrounded by the corpses of his wife and children, while a different, more powerful youkai stands before him and declares herself to be his new wife by right of conquest.

It's something you always have to be mindful of when dealing with cross-species relationships.
