Well, actually, the spider she is based on, the argiope spider, has a rather involved courting ritual where the male will weave a web somewhere close to the female's until she gets used to his presence and accepts him as a mate. There is very little indication that argiope females consume the males post-coitus, unless the female is starved or in other distress.

Argiope are also remarkably docile and take being handled by humans very well.
