I personally find the backgrounds of the characters very appealing.

Calling ZUN unoriginal for just taking a real life historical figure and making her into a Gensokyo Persona as the Final boss in Ten Desires can be now claimed for Shin as well.

Again, I don't see how this is a bad thing at all.

Japanese history and mythology is full of things that can find their way into Touhou and add to the whole story around Gensokyo.
