I have reservations about the contemporary relevance of Kouhaku, as its viewership ratings continue to decline year after year. Young people are not watching it at all. While I understand that many artists aspire to perform on the show, I wouldn't say it is an indicator of anything. In fact, I would even wager that if a group like BokuPico were to make an appearance on Kouhaku, the increase in fans/social media following would likely only be modest at best. They've already appeared on major television programs and it did nothing.
