Youkai are monsters who best understand the language of violence. Beating them down every so often reminds them who the alpha female is, along with the consequences of acting up.

Some youkai like to think they aren't monsters, but the majority of them ruin any chance of youkai on the whole being treated as anything but. Also, why didn't Byakuren just stand down and refuse to fight the moment Reimu started to get aggressive? Doesn't seem like she minds violence too much herself.
