And yes, there are oni that are portrayed as being on friendly terms with humans, although usually from a distance rather than openly. For example, the guardians of Okinawa are oni.

However, the image of an oni toting a kanabo is 1000-1500 years old, older than the direct association between oni and brute strength. Supposedly it's a trait inherited from various demons out of Chinese buddhism.
