It depends a lot on charachter and difficulty. For example, Easy Reimu and Normal Yukari have completely different play.

You can start scoring before you're able to NMNB the game consistently, but some kind of consistency on the patterns should be useful. IN has rather static difficulty overall, so you'll be spending a lot of time (we're speaking of hundreds of hours) in spell and stage practice grinding consistency to make you fail a boss rather rarely. And Kaguya can still surprise you with bullshit RNG if she feels like it. Get some basic consistency down, but don't force your entire energy into consistency grind.

The easier strategy for spells is to shoot unfocused as a human. Start adding grazing techniques one by one.

Also keep in mind, when forming your own strategies for attacks, that you get more bonus timepoints from capturing an spell the faster you capture it.

Which difficulty and shot-type are you planning to score on, and what is your goal? If lunatic feels too brutal try the other modes. If full game feels too drastic lenght of consistency, try extra.

Your main goals at the start of scoring should be to collect as many items as possible, and to collect them at -80% value. Also, when playin as a human - don't destroy familiars on the stage 6 cash-in, since the less familiars you destroy, the more point-items you get from those fairies.
Then come spell bonuses. If you have deaths and/or bombs, try to keep them outside Spell Cards. A mistake during a spell is more drastic than a mistake outside one.
Third thing is timepoints and gaining up your Point-item Value. IN's value goes up really high (over 2M/item) if you know what to do.
The final thing is the ending bonus, IN (especially lunatic) has a huge one. Not only lives heighten it, but you also must capture all of Kaguya's Last Spells for maximal Night Bonus.
