Was pretty nice to fish up a picture of my Exile in its infancy. Kai and his pets have come a long way. Didn't go about raising pets much later in the game but I think some of the strategies that follow might be applicable to a person earlier in the game.

Golden rule is the stuff that keeps your character alive will keep your pets alive. Give her stuff that has a decent amount of PV/DV. More importantly, have her equip stuff with lots of resists. You're probably going to have to cobble up a nice suit from the random gear you find in dungeons so keep your eyes open. It just gets that much harder when you have multiple pets to gear but it's almost required. A living weapon full of resists should do wonders as well if you can get your hands on one but not absolutely required.

When you get to South Tyris you have more options at your disposal. First, notice that the Exile's mana attribute is better than its life attribute. This means it gets more MP on level up than HP so it's MP bar is actually longer/better than its HP bar. Leold can grant your pet a trait that creates a barrier that is fueled by your MP bar. In essence, when you get damaged it goes to your MP bar instead of your HP bar first. Damage will go to your MP first until a certain threshold is met where the barrier will shut off and you take damage from your HP bar again. While I don't have this barrier for my Exile due to having some really good tanks, I'll get into this shortly, I will definitely pick up barrier soon.

Another thing you need to do for your Exile is build out its speed with AP. Pets, and characters, just do better with more speed. They get more actions so if they're strong enough they'll just kill stuff before anything can even touch them.

Having good tanks can keep your ranged pets alive. My Valkyrie served as my tank and had her learn shadowstep from Leold. When she spots an enemy she teleports instantly to it, getting its attention, and sticking to it. Since the enemies are focused on her my Exile stays relatively safe. Get a few tank pets with shadow step and you should have a nice vanguard. I currently have two now but I wouldn't mind more. While I don't have provoke on my pets that might work too.

Last thing you can do is build out its HP through giving the Exile hero cheese. I've been doing that with all my pets. Unfortunately, this is more of an endgame thing. It takes an extraordinary amount of time to be able to farm hero cheese with ease but I just wanted to point it out as a future option if you end up sticking around.

Final note, kinda related to survival, is to give your Exile equipment that enhances spells. That should boost its damage and in turn, allow you to kill things hopefully before they even touch your Exile.
