Anons used to know the difference between a shitpost, a meme conversation, and genuine discussion. They used to understand what was and wasn't acceptable for the thread, as well what should or shouldn't be mentioned to keep things on topic.

I suppose a steady stream of original content helped to dull the impact of shitposting. The pace of new profiles was maybe a tad faster back in those days, so don't heap all your troubles on KC.
The threads back then really were just better. If it wasn't the writefags, you had the thread regulars pushing their innocent fantasies and creating what would become the latenight verse.
You also had the more lewd fantasies. Waifufags would post their latest commissions, but even the ones who didn't get commissions would discuss and IMAGINE.
